The festive season is always a special time of the year. It is also a time when busy people tend to “lose their guard” with heightened travel, holiday decorations and crowded events. In order to prevent fire outbreaks and protect your home; here are basic safety tips to help one stay safe and get the best out of the season.
  Fire safety:
Inspect electrical decorations- Always run a check on holiday lights, extension cables and electrical decorations for broken cables, damaged plug or lose cables.

• Avoid overload sockets- Plugging too many devices into one electrical outlet can increase the risk of electrical fire. It is also advisable to use surge protectors.

• Decorate safely- Avoid the use of candles close to combustible materials like curtains. Put off candles when leaving the house or going to bed.

• Ensure your fire extinguishers are active. Also endeavor the fire alarm and smoke detectors are in good condition.

• Always lock doors, windows and gates properly before leaving the house. Avoid the temptation of leaving your spare key in predictable spots such as under the foot mat, in flower vase, on the window hood. If you must leave a spare key, drop it with a trustworthy neighbor.

• Avoid sharing personal details with strangers and acquaintances whether in person or online.

• With the advent of social media, resist the temptation of sharing real time updates about travel plans or expensive shopping items, you never know who may be stalking you.

• Keep your bags secured with padlocks and be mindful of pick-pockets in public spaces.

• Ensure emergency contact numbers are saved. That includes local police, fire service and trusted family members and neighbours.

• Keep the ladders and other tools in safe places that cannot be accessed by any intruder.

• Create a lively environment by turning on the radio or lights inside the house at night.
Ensure that there are no tall grasses that can become a hiding place for invaders of your premises.

• Ensure that there are no trees near the fence that can become a tool for intruders to enter the house.
• Install surveillance camera and burglar alarm.
